Souf Efrika!

I miss home today! Not my home located within the M25. My home across the seas. Sunny South Africa!

Although I have been living in London for 7 years, I have never called this place Home. Even though I have no plans to return to South Africa, and therefore, technically, London is 'home'. I still have my mom's home phone number saved as 'Home' in my contacts.  It's hard to let go of some things.

I don't get homesick very often, but sometimes I see or hear something that reminds me of home and I get quite nostalgic.

All I want to do right now is go to Wimpy and have a cheese and mushroom burger! I think I'd have a creme soda to top it off!

Wimpy...Fresh from the griddle!!

I miss shops like Game and Clicks. My mom would go look at whatever she needed and I would always go look in the music section. Or when my sister and I were really young, we used to like looking at the baby clothes section (Don't know why). I had a gold clicks card (Like a Boots Advantage Card), which my mom used all the time, but always gave me the vouchers...BONUS!

I miss going to a restaurant where the service is genuine and friendly! In the UK, most waiters/resses don't care much for customer service, as they are on an hourly wage anyway. When I was a waitress back home I worked for tips as we only got R10 a shift (these shifts could last anything from 1 hour to 8 hours depending on how busy the restaurant was. R10 doesn't even amount to a £1).

I miss going to Pick 'n Pay with my mom for our grocery shop, and trying to get her to buy me a chocolate Super M. I've never found a milkshake here that I enjoy as much!
AAAAAAAAAH I miss REAL biltong!! The Saffa shops have it, but it's never as good! The boerewors isn't too bad though, and we normally get that for our braai's. But it's not the cheapest! The Boyf, who's a Brit, has also discovered he has a taste for Koo Creamed Sweetcorn.

I miss my best friend! One of the hard things about being a Saffa in London is that you have to say goodbye to a lot of friends who have had to go back to South Africa due to visas expiring and unable to have them renewed.  This country is messed up  like that, hard working people that pay taxes and do good for the country get kicked out. All other rubbish living off the system, oh they can stay! It's just not right!

I miss my family and my dogs! I talk to The Mama almost every day but I wish I could just pop in for some lunch or tea or go to Wimpy!!  I'm dying to see The Sis's new house and all her dogs and cats. She has also recently got engaged so wish I could be there for all the planning. But so far we are doing ok over the interweb! The Bro used to be in London but recently moved to Canada to be with his girlfriend who also had to leave the UK due to visa issues. When he was here, homesickness wasn't too bad because I had a little piece of home just round the corner.

Very hard being far away especially on important dates but this is the life I chose and I just have to make do with Skype calls and Facebook photos!
